This is Tung-pang Lam's first exhibition after his study in the UK, featuring works that were created in London from 2003-2006.

The exhibition includes a two metre-long ink and mixed media piece, in addition to his latest artworks in his recent solo exhibition in London.

After establishing his studio in Fotan in 2001, artist Tung-pang Lam went to London to further study from 2003 to 2006, but never stopped creating new works. A documentary video filmed by the artist himself will be screened during the talk to share thoughts and ideas he developed during his overseas study.

Au Hoi-lam is one of the few artists of her generation who is totally devoted to drawing. Her drawings do not adhere to any fixed form, whether concrete or abstract. First and foremost, she attaches great importance to the use of handy skills in her artistic creations. This can be seen in her indirect and sensual narrative approach, the sweet and pastel colours, the fine texture and more, all of which show a close relationship between her creativity and a keen love of crafts.

In recent years, the works of Au Hoi-lam have become a sort of pictorial journal that record her thoughts and personal life experiences. Yet her paintings are often like indecipherable codes. Even though all her thoughts are transformed into readable visual elements, the actual words from her experiences remain private and hidden in the background.

In the exhibition "When Words are Sweet", Au Hoi-lam tries to crack some of these private codes. She reveals a beautiful world of private words formerly kept to herself. We do not know how much these secret messages and promises weigh, or whether they are near or far from the present moment, or even whether they are real memories or simply a kind of yearning. These unspoken words ─ not easily said to anybody － have a hazy, powerful quality in Au Hoi-lam's works. Indeed, her words become both a narration of the context and powerful visual images in their own right.

區凱琳是香港少數全力投身於繪畫創作的新一代藝術家。其繪畫並不執著於具象或抽象的固定形式，然而，她對「手藝」於藝術創作上的重要性卻顯得十分重視。這一點，從她婉轉感性的敘事手法，甜美溫和的用色，琢磨細膩的肌理等，不難察覺到其創作與手藝的親密關係。

過去幾年，區凱琳的作品正如圖畫手記，一向喜愛記錄個人生活經驗所交織的思緒，畫面呈現的意象仿似不能拆解的私人密碼。由於經驗是私人的，思緒雖經已轉化成為可閱讀的視覺元素，但故事背後卻仍然暗藏私話。

在「甜言蜜語」展覽中，區凱琳嘗試解開個人私密，將美麗的私言切語坦然道出，這些不易宣之於口的密語或承諾，是輕是重、是近是遠、是回憶是憧憬已分不清，既朦朧卻深刻。文字言語於作品中，既是內容的明確敘述，同時亦為視覺圖像的直接傳達。

This exhibition will showcase the works of Jerry Kwan since the 70's, including unexhibited printmaking and drawing at his early stage, the oil paintings during his time in New York, and the mixed media works after his return to Hong Kong.In coincide with the exhibition opening, a book on the retrospective of Jerry Kwan will be published.

Heavy and textual oil pigments, exquisite refinement of color and tones, and depiction of the New York underground scenes have become the signification of Kwan's thirty-year artistic development. Stepping into the 20th Century, dead bodies of insects appeared on his oil paintings abruptly. Life and death, death and life, emerged again from the image reference of the gigantic skull and the tiny baby; then the head portray of Pope and the covered private part of body . Representation and the low chroma marked the artistic transition of Kwan in this period. Recently, being interested in social issues, Kwan has developed a series of works based on the imitation of folk art. Its vividness and the use of diverse materials demonstrated traditional art in modernized style.

In the 60's and 70's, Kwan practiced art independently before he entered the extra-mural Department of Hong Kong University to learn painting. In the 80's, he furthered his learning in New York, a city which was full of threats at that time. The perilous political, social and economic conditions however became the sources of inspiration to Kwan.

Kwan returned to Hong Kong in 1997, marking an end to his 25-year self-exile. Instead of making work about himself, Kwan chooses to explore the world, looks back upon traditions, and develops new artistic directions. He is now living in his studio in Fotan, and enjoying his work every day. Currently, he is working as a part-time lecturer at the Department of Fine Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

是次展覽將展出畫家關晃自七十年代至今的作品。有未曾展出過的早期版畫及素描作品、長居紐約期間的油畫作品及回港後約十年間的混合素材畫作。關晃的回顧書冊將於開幕日同期發佈。

在三十多年的創作歷程中，厚重的油彩、對色彩與明陰以高度精的處理 ，以及對紐約「地下」境象的描寫，固然已成為關晃的標記；步入二十世紀，油彩上突然多了些昆蟲屍體；生生死死，再見於巨大骷髏頭與細小嬰孩的圖像指涉、再有教宗頭像與半掩私處的人體，具象風格與粉色調子，又是為一次變奏；由對時事議題的興趣，回到近年對民間藝術的模仿，關晃創作了一系列生動活潑的造型，精彩多變的物料運用，是在傳統藝術上，一場悅目的現代化演繹。

六七十年代的關晃，自由寫生，無師自通；在香港大學校外進修部學習畫畫。八十年代，他跑到紐約深造；在充滿危機感的城市，眼前政治、社會、生活環境，一一觸發創作。一九九七年回港，結束被他稱為"自我放遂"的整整二十五年。自言沒興趣創作以個人為題的作品。現居於火炭工作室，仍每天努力創作，並積極尋新點子；繼續放眼世界，回溯傳統；找尋新的創作課題，開闢新的創作方式。關氏現任香港中文大學藝術系兼職講師。

In coincide with the exhibition opening, a book on the retrospective of Jerry Kwan will be published. The book includes the reproductions of Kwan's unique and wondrous artworks. The design of the book cover and its first page are developed from a painting of Kwan in 1999, named "The Spirit of Zen Buddhism". The color strips on the cover are also generated from the same painting as to echo Kwan's profundity in mastering colors.

Apart form the exhibitions at Cattle Depot Artists Village, we have specially opened Kwan's studio in Fotan during weekends. Such that people can have the chance to see more works, and get a closer touch with the artistic life of Jerry Kwan.
